The Samoyed dog breed originated from Siberia and is labeled as the working dogs. They worked side by side with huntsmen, fishermen, and other noblemen during those times who need help in securing pieces of equipment used for hunting. They are also helpful in pulling sleds used in transporting goods. They keep their owners warm during cold seasons. They are hardworking and very friendly.
Usually calm and responsive, Samoyed dogs are great companions both indoors and outdoors. Its most famous trademark is their cute smile.
The most remarkable trait of this breed is their amiable nature. They get along pretty well with other dogs and the members of the family where it belongs. It barks at strangers but they are not aggressive.
As of late, its role is to be a home buddy dog and tend children instinctively.
Size
The usual size of a Samoyed male is 21-23.5 in. Their weight ranges within 45-65 lbs. On the other hand, the size of a Samoyed female is 19-21 in. Their weight ranges within 35-30 lbs.
Coat Care
The coat colors ofdSamoyed dogs are pure white or yellow and cream, so it is only proper for their owners to brush them thoroughly and consistently. It should be combed three to four times a week. When shredding starts, it is usually heavy, so it is expected of the owner to comb it daily.
Family Life
Samoyed dogs love the human family that raised them up. They are attached to the children more, but are still clingy to everyone. The family will surely become happy with them.
Lifestyle
It is a dog meant for both indoor and outdoor lifestyle. The behavior of a Samoyed dog is well-balanced. They can stay indoors having leisure time with children, and they can also be active outdoors when it is necessary or if it is time for them to have an outdoor activity. They fit well in cold places and would be very uncomfortable in warm or extremely hot places. It does not suit the role of a watchdog because it is too gentle and kind.
Health
Samoyed dogs are prone to having kidney problems which is caused by a genetic disease called Samoyed Hereditary Glomerulopathy, and would, more often than not, lead to renal failure. They are also prone to having hypothyroidism, diabetes, hip dysplasia, Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) and many other diseases. Life expectancy is 12-15 years.
Exercise
Daily walks would be sufficient for a Samoyed dog if the owners are living in an apartment or any small-spaced residences. Otherwise, playing in the backyard or along the neighborhood playground would suffice. But they dont need much exercise when the weather starts to warm up because their double coats already provide them the warm feeling.
Training
Samoyed dogs should be trained well while they are still young. They can develop behavioral problems such as excessive barking if not trained properly. They are easy to teach though because of their amiable, gentle, and obedient behavior.
